There is frequent mention of the internationally famous Paul Endacott collection of North American Indian items but there is so much more to see .....
We are very privileged to have on display 2 exquisite, beautifully preserved original Ashburton firemen’s helmets. As well as being an ancient stannary town, Ashburton was once known for its production of Ashburton Pop, which was thought to be a type of champagne, but the original recipe was lost in 1765 when the brewer died. Whatever did we do before the advent of iphones and ipads! Here we have a wonderful original slate that was discovered intact in the attic of one of the local houses – it reads: “Nellie, I am staying up with Aunt Lizzie tonight her’s some bad don’t think her’ll last till morning. Father and Willy have gone up Hazel Hill picking erts. Kettles on the hob and dont forget to put the cat out. Mother” |
